I’ve been up and down a mountain and I’m exhausted

It’s been awhile, I know. What brought me back to the blog is the behaviour of my blood glucose that I find quite bizarre. I’m wondering if any of your T1s have experienced anything similar.

Last week I wrote an email to my endocrinologist detailing a strange spike in glucose. I split my 24-hour insulin into half at morning, half at night. Here’s what has happened over the last while.

In late November, 2023, I was using 12 units in the morning and evening for a total of 24 units daily.

Then….

Since this date, my glucose started to drop and I reduced the insulin to avoid repeated bouts of hypoglycemia. I injected 23 units last evening and still had my Dexcom alarm alert me to a low in the early morning. I dropped the dose to 20 units. I’m a bit high but I’ll see how the day goes. If this downward trend continues I expect to get back to 12/12 or 13/13 (24 or 26) units a day.
I did labs yesterday in preparation for a phone appointment with the endo this week. As usual, all is normal. I’m healthy except for glucose — my A1C is 8.2 per cent. This is a level I’ve been at for a year, and it seems the best I can do with my crazy fluctuations.
I eat low carb with the exception of the occasional “eat what I want” days. Exercise doesn’t affect my glucose one bit, and I’m pretty active. I’ve recently moved to a new job in merchandising which has me visiting multiple large retail outlets (Walmart and such) each day. That’s a fair bit of walking.
So what gives? Any ideas on what causes this tsunami of glucose surge and retreat?
